CLIMATE SHIFTS IN DUBBO AND THE ORANA REGION: A COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVE
Let’s work together to understand and adapt to our changing climate for a sustainable future.
Residents of Dubbo and the broader Orana region have been observing noticeable changes in our local climate. Summers are becoming hotter, winters milder, and the prolonged dry spells more frequent. These patterns alight with broader climate trends observed across New South Wales.
Rising Temperatures and Changing Seasons
Data indicates that average temperatures in the Central West and Orana regions have been on the rise since the 1970s. Projections suggest that by 2030, average temperatures could increase by approximately 0.7°C, with further increases expected by 2070 . This warming trend is accompanied by an increase in the number of days exceeding 35°C and a decrease in cold nights, signalling a shift in our seasonal patterns.

Drought Conditions and Water Security
The region has experienced significant drought periods, notably in 2019, which was recorded as the hottest and driest year on record for Australia. These conditions have strained water resources, agriculture, and the local economy. In response, local councils, including Dubbo Regional Council, are developing drought resilience plans to better prepare for and mitigate the impacts of future droughts
Community Engagement and Adaptation
Addressing these climatic changes requires a collective effort. Community involvement is crucial in developing and implementing strategies to adapt to our changing environment. Engaging in local initiatives, staying informed, and supporting sustainable practices can contribute to building a resilient community.
